An eleven-year-old boy named Ronn Christian Macalinao is just an average sixth grader—he loves to hang out and watch basketball with friends, and play computer games. What’s interesting about him is that he has a passion for chess game which he got from his father.

Ronn—as how he wanted to be called—wasn’t really interested anymore to play chess before the city meet because his interest was basketball. But Ma’am Lulu Montemayor, his coach, strictly told him that he must continue representing Tenejero Elementary School (TES) in chess game so that his effort in his trainings for the last few years will not be wasted. He followed the advice of his coach and he made it to become one of the Regional competitions’ delegates.

When he was in Grade five, he was the 4th placer in the District Meet and finally made it this year’s City Meet, as the second place winner (who will compete in the CLRAA, early 2014). He bagged 5 wins without losing in his 5 games.

When asked why he likes this sport, he answered, “Astig kasi yung sport; patalasan ng isip at patatagan sa laban,” Ronn said.

Of course, we always learn something in everything that we do, and in Ronn’s case, he said he learned to be patient and self-disciplined. According to him, people who want to engage in this sport needs discipline, patience and determination. “Laro-laro lang sabi nga ng coach ko. No hurt feelings or regret, sakaling matalo. Manalo man o matalo basta lumalaban. Sa bawat laro, hindi lang talas ng isip kundi lakas ng loob ang puhunan,”,Ronn ended, an ordinary boy who  one never knows might turn out to be one of the great chess masters in the future.
